Be careful about installing a Facebook application called ‘Error Check System’!
Thousands of Facebook users today seem to be getting messages saying that 10 or 20 of their friends had tried to view their profile but there was an error. The solution that was recommended of course was that they install the Error Check application. As far as I can see though there was in fact no real error and the profiles were fine to look at.
This is what you may see in your Notifications Panel:
And clicking on View The Errors Message takes you to:
More investigation is required but the application certainly doesn’t look legitimate and so Facebook users should be wary of it’s motive!
Update 1:
It seems that the application is definately NOT made by Facebook.
Reports suggest it is in fact a self-replicating worm that once installed automatically sends a notification to all of your friends saying that you have encountered errors in their profile, and to “Click here to view the errors”..
If they then install it repeats the process ….. and so the worm spreads!
You profile does not in fact have errors on it and is working fine.
It’s unsure what damage the application could do but there is potential that it could collect information about you and your friends from your profile or do any sort of damage to the info you have on Facebook.
I guess it’s likely to be removed by Facebook shortly anyway, but in the meantime …….
Don’t install this application …… and if you have installed it …. hit that remove button now!!
Update 2:
It seems from your comments below that some of you are struggling to remove the Error Check System application so here are the exact steps you need to follow to get rid of it:
- Click “Applications” in the bottom, left-hand corner of Facebook.
- Next, click “Edit” in the top, right-hand corner of the Applications menu.
- Find “Error Check System” in the list, then click the “X” on the line next to its name.
- A window will appear confirming this action. Select “Remove” to completely remove the application.
I’ll update this page later if more information surfaces.
Please post this URL to your Facebook page to alert your friends about the possible dangers of this application!

Is there any Facebook site, group or page that shows a list of any and/or all known false applications and/or viruses connected to Facebook applications? Those of us who do a lot of the charity games as well as regular gaming just for fun are considerably concerned over these issues. Until there is further notice of a resolution to these problems, I will not be adding any new applications and will only be using the ones that I know are safe for sure. I will also recommend to all of my friends that they do the same. Any advice you may have would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Thanks alot for the warning. I myself received that very message earlier today and unknowingly added the error correction thing. When I realized that it did nothing at all for me, I removed it and never gave it another thought. Hopefully others will get this warning first.

1 app eror …. is same like 2 app 3dapartments
just 2 replace 1 and u see only 3d app on places wher eror app be before and u get spam 3d… more after they repace icons on eror app
and icon is funy “X”
only worst choice for icon is that creator make som name like:
“this is a virus” xD
and “x” is on 1 and 2 app just a in lil diferent design
i think that “x” is trade mark for this funy app
Kirsty 02.22.09 at 2:38 pm
yes i didnt click on the link i looked like some sort of virus. what i did was put a message on my status saying dont accept those applications because they have some sort of virus in it that then sends to everyone.

This application kept installing itself automatically to my profile applications whenever any of my friends added it.
I had to Block the application but it is disgraceful that Facebook has failed to remove this application yet.
It may have gathered all the info prior to the blocking and the ‘activation’ page is a false page as it has ALREADY INSTALLED itself into your applications by the time you can view that page.
yvonne kearsley 02.22.09 at 5:53 pm
i installed it yesterday as on my notifications it said one of my friends had encountered an error etc but when i have looked on apps then edit it isn’t there. Does that mean that i am safe. My facebook kept freezing and then microsoft error report would pop up then page would close down so that is why i installed it, because i thought it would sort that prob out
Helen 02.22.09 at 6:51 pm
I added this application yesterday!!!
I’ve been through all my applications to delete it like you’ve said but it isn’t showing in any of the lists!?!
I’m gonna run my anti virus and do a full scan on my netbook to make sure there’s nothing on it.
mahesh 02.22.09 at 7:41 pm
no body can trust the technology…so my suggesion is that, we always shout not depent on it…….the best thing to do is… put some limitations in all our personal profiles… without accepting all the garbage requests…etc

Removing applications is easy:
Click the facebook logo in the top left.
In the “Applications” section on the right, click “Edit”.
Find the application in the list, and click the “x” on the right.

Just a little bit of info folks, this ‘virus’ / ‘app’ has had one very apparent effect on my own system so far before I removed it which was to confused the system into keystroking everying backwards. What I mean exactly is that the little straight lines cursor ‘|’ this that flashes, jumps behind the character typed to cause a sentence that reads backwards. Moving away from Facebook, the problem persisted. But didn’t seem to operate outside of FF. I simply removed the app, closed FF down and restarted. Seems to have worked.
Would appreciate any further insight into more dangerous problems.

It seems that this dangerous application is gone for good. It isn’t anywhere in my applications list and when I type into the search engine on FB and click on its link its page doesn’t seem to exist at all. I REALLY hope my Facebook doesn’t get deleted from that – I would DIE…
